One of the major concepts and missions of the faculty of medicine and health sciences, Gadarif University is to participate in planning and solving community related health problems at the local and regional level. Sudan as a sub-Saharan area has its characteristic endemicity. Gadarif state is one of the most important states in Sudan and play a great role in economical and agricultural activities in the country. Gadarif state cover 75.000 Km2 and lies between latitude 14-16 North and longitude 33-36. It is a part of eastern region bordered by Khartoum state in North, Sennar state in the south, Kassala state & Ethiopia in the East & Gezira state in the west .The state is divided to ten localities. The population of the state is estimated 1727401 and consist of the most tribes in the country. Poor savannah climate in all parts of the state. Clay & muddy soil, average of rainfall is 612 /mm and there are many mountains & forests scattered throughout the state .There are many rivers passes through the state (Atbra, Elrahad, Dindir, Saitit & Basalam).
VL is a major problem in Gadarif State. The disease is endemic in various parts of the state especially in Alrahad , Atbra river area and the rural areas. Kala azar Co-infections in the area are tuberculosis and HIV. Therefore the area is in real need for medical research centre to combat the previous mentioned diseases. Gadarif Kala-azar Research Centre (GKRC) is a interdisciplinary of distinguished scholars who are experts in investigatation, prevention and promote health. Their work is focused on identifying the most practical, scientific solutions for addressing some of society’s most pervasive-and preventable-health issues, such as epidemics and tropical diseases, to raise the standards of scientific investigations that matters for health. (GKRC) researchers are teaming up on numerous, long- and short-term projects designed to turn research into effective ways to promote well-being at every stage of life.
The GKRC scholars come from various disciplines and scientific backgrounds and design scientifically grounded multidisciplinary studies to evaluate medical data and to apply innovative solutions and approaches to attain necessary change. They established numerous smart partnerships with local authorities and communities as well as other health research centers to evaluate and track at-risk populations, analyze risk factors, and design interventions that really work. Their work also addresses far-reaching global concerns, including population studies and ways to shrink health imbalance within and across communities.
GKRC program will formulate the coming generation of innovators and problem-solvers. Through this program, the GKRC and/or invited scholars, enables young scientists to obtain the required skills to initiate and appraise studies and to become future leaders in improving the health of individuals and populations.
The research projects run through GKRC will establish the basis for effective,efficient,innovative, and evidence-based interventions that will make a real and measureable difference in healthy living.
